How does the system work?

From purchase to return – how does it work in practice?

The deposit-refund system is a mechanism aimed at increasing the recycling and reuse of beverage waste through the collection of empty packaging. It involves charging a deposit for the purchase of beverages in specific packaging, then refunding it upon returning the empty packaging to a collection point.

In Poland, this system will come into effect on October 1, 2025, and will require the
cooperation and involvement of all stakeholders in the value chain.

Why is the deposit-refund system being introduced? What is its purpose?

The introduction of the deposit-refund system is part of the implementation of the circular economy policy and the alignment of Polish law with EU environmental regulations. The main goal is to reduce the environmental impact of plastic products.

Entrepreneurs marketing packaged beverages will be required to achieve specific levels of separate collection of packaging and packaging waste within the system – 77% from 2025 and 90% from 2029. Furthermore, single-use plastic bottles – including caps and lids – will be required to contain a minimum of 25% recycled content from 2025 and 30% from 2030.
